HAND SANITIZER/TISSUE COLLECTION DRIVE

The PTG is collecting hand santizer and tissues to distribute out to teachers at Parkside. Any donation is welcome!

We will be collecting the donations during your child's Parent/Student Conference Night. We will have a table set up all 4 nights that you can drop it off at. Help us show support by donating these items that aren't in the budget and the teachers pay for themselves.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Members of the Parkside Community,

What a great first two weeks here at Parkside! Students and staff have done a tremendous job getting the year off to a great start with the big changes we prepared for. As we begin the year there are things you need to be aware of and good news that must be shared. With that in mind, I plan to send out a monthly communication. I hope you find it helpful.

New Students, New Staff, New Building

Parkside added grade 5 this year and a great deal of preparation was undertaken to ready ourselves for this addition. Construction was completed in time to open the year. Thanks to The City of Manchester, Schroeder Construction Management, Aramark and Parkside staff for all the hard work and attention to important details. We will hold a site walk on Tuesday as part of our Principal’s Fall Information Night to show them off. You may have noticed the exterior of the building also changed drastically. The playground was expanded with new play items, a new basketball court and soccer pitch (to open in the Spring) were also constructed. The fencing in the field is the beginning of the Community Garden. More information will be available in the Spring about how your family can use a garden plot!

50% of our students are new to Parkside this year as both our 5th and 6th graders started a new school. Orientations went well and the year began very smoothly. Students were quickly orientated to their day and the building. We are making some adjustments to planned procedures as we begin. Lunches have gone very smoothly and we thank our district food service for their attention and dedication. All lunches have been on time and all students have had plenty of time to eat in an unhurried way as we moved from accommodating two lunches per period to three lunches per period.

About 25% of the staff are new to Parkside this year. This includes 5th grade transfer teachers, other district staff who requested to come to Parkside as well as new hires replacing retirees and staff who departed. They are all doing a great job and are a welcome addition to Parkside. As your children get settled in ask them to tell you a little about their teachers.

Principal’s Fall Information Night

Parkside will hold its annual Principal’s Fall Information Night on Tuesday September 17th at 6:30 p.m. This is a chance to hear about programming for the year and school wide information and processes. As noted above a school tour will be included. (This is not Back to School Night)

Calendar Information

Parkside Maintains a calendar of events on our website. If there is a category of information you feel you need that is not there please let us know. Here is our web address https://parkside.mansd.org/

PTG Meeting

The first PTG Meeting of the year will be this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (everything in the evening at Parkside begins at 6:30 p.m.). The meeting will be held in the Library. Everyone is encouraged to attend!

Schoolwide Fundraiser

Each year Parkside undertakes one school wide fundraiser to support general school activities. Field Trips, Buses, Special Materials, and Assemblies are just some of the things these funds support. Our goal is to limit the number of things we ask families to provide funds for. We will hold our kick off assemblies on Monday the 16th. 5th and 6th grade students will be bringing home a packet with information. 7th and 8th grade students will be bringing home information specifically designed to promote online access.

All participation can take place on line and we truly hope you can support the activities that fill out your child’s school experience. Every little bit helps. Here is information regarding our fundraiser.

Dear West Side Families,

As you may know, Parkside is currently preparing to add grade five this coming year (2019-20) and become a grade 5-8 school. This will support the district redistricting efforts and assist in providing smaller class sizes at elementary schools on the west side. We are seeking family participation in our planning for this change. Below you will find a link to a survey form allowing you to volunteer to join our team. We are recruiting a family representative from each of the five schools on the west side of Manchester. Please use the link below to access the survey if you are interested in participating in the Steering Committee. The selected representative for each school will be a valued voice as we continue the preparations for this change.

Happy New Year!

Parkside hopes this finds your family well as we begin the new year. It is hard to believe the year is almost half over. The second quarter ends on January 25th and report cards will go home on February 1st.

Parkside will be holding our school spelling bee during the month of January to determine our representatives to both the city spelling bee as well as the state bee. Each team will hold a bee within the team to determine the top two spellers from each team. A school bee will be held on January 23rd to determine our school champion who qualifies for the state bee as well as the top finishers who qualify for the city bee. This has always been a fun and challenging event. Last year our school winner placed within the top 15 at the state bee.

Parkside received some terrific news from the state of New Hampshire regarding our students’ performance on the statewide assessment. Parkside students made significant growth in reading last year. Our students as a whole were in the 60th percentile for growth last year. That tells us that our students out performed 59% of all of the students in the comparison group. We have never seen numbers like that before. When we look at the students who were assessed, we have some great examples of this growth. For example, last year’s 8th grade: 47% of our students were proficient or proficient with distinction last year compared to 31% of them the previous year. That is tremendous growth over the course of a year! All of our subgroups exhibited strong growth last year. Our EL students were particularly strong performing in the 62nd percentile. In math our overall growth percentile was the 53rd. This compares very favorably with the other middle schools in the district. On the reading side Parkside performed 10-15 percentile better than other schools in the district. On the math side the difference was between 6 and 16 percentile points. As we focus on continued reading and math improvement for all students, the consistency of your child’s use of both Reading Plus (for reading) and IReady (for math) must be emphasized. Most of our students have significant gaps in these areas and these individualized learning platforms are helping to rapidly close these gaps. As of Monday December 31st. Parkside’s overall reading proficiency has increased by 1.5 grade levels since the beginning of the year. Please ask your child to show you Reading Plus and IReady at home in order to see first hand the progress being made.

The Manchester School District’s primary responsibility is the safety of our students. Therefore, when any type of threat regarding our school district is made, we evaluate the circumstances and take the appropriate measures.

As students were arriving at the Middle School at Parkside this morning a parent reported seeing an adult with a weapon arguing with a child on a street near the school. Both Parkside and Gossler were put into a brief reverse evacuation and secure campus, meaning that children arriving at school were escorted inside and brought inside to ensure their safety. Police responded, detained the individual and are continuing to investigate.

Upon detainment of the individual, the secure campus was lifted and the school day resumed on a normal schedule at both schools.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Members of the Parkside Community,

All of us at Parkside hope your Thanksgiving Holiday was restful and you found much to be thankful for. As we begin the holiday season, we know there are children here at Parkside in need. The simple things such as food, shelter and clothing are things they are truly thankful for. This year we are sponsoring The Parkside Giving Tree. Parkside Staff and Families can select an ornament tag from our Giving Tree located in the main office. Each ornament includes the gender, age, clothing and shoe sizes, and gift wish of a student in need of holiday help.

Please note that applications have been given to families that fall within one of the following criteria:

  • Homeless/Displaced;
  • Severe Economic Difficulties;
  • Residing within a foster home

While applications have been provided to all families that meet the above referenced criteria, participation is not mandatory. As such, some families have opted out of the program as they feel their situation has stabilized to the point where they no longer require outside assistance.

If you wish to help make the holiday season a positive one for a child in need, stop by and take a look at the needs demonstrated on the ornaments (Many have already been claimed). Or you can visit our website beginning December 4th to see a comprehensive list of needs. Should you have any questions or concerns, please free to contact me.

Thank you, once again, for helping our Parkside Families.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Members of the Parkside Community,

Students were given their first progress report of the year to bring home to you on Friday. Please take the time to review this with your child and congratulate him or her for the successes and reinforce your expectations where the current grade may fall short. Each team has required a parent signature be returned. There is either a team form or an extra copy of the progress report for your signature. Students are required to return a parent signature. First Quarter Report Cards will go home on November 16.

If a student is failing two or more classes on this progress report, Academic Support has been assigned. This is a required additional class after school Monday through Thursday lasting until 3:15 p.m. If this is the case you will be notified in a separate message with the details and your child has been provided a letter with the progress report explaining the situation.

The improvement and maintenance of reading abd math skills is a primary focus here at Parkside. Beginning next week students will be expected to complete 100 minutes per week in Reading Plus or IReady (for reading improvement) and 100 minutes of IReady or Moby Max online instruction (for math). 108 minutes of regular class time are provided for all students for each area each week. Other opportunities are often available such as Enrichment time or Academic Support, providing sufficient time for students to meet this weekly expectation. The programs can also be accessed from home to allow additional time and also family review of student progress. Your child can show you their results when they are logged in. Student results and growth are monitored weekly here at Parkside and will be shared with the community on a regular basis.

Parkside has begun the implementation of our Project Based Learning activities. This week the 8th grade has begun the development of their animal classification and taxonomy project. One of the goals is to define characteristics of living things as well as where humans fit into the natural world. Ask your 8th grader about this project.

Our next PTG meeting is Wednesday, October 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the Parkside Library.
